Talk about the sublime to the ridiculous, I still have the mag somewhere with the feature on Plum Crazy when first built, (was it CC or R&C?) the write up mentioned all the brand new bits that went into it. Wasn't the original lump a crossflow?
It's looking good Mel, can't wait to see it out.

Thangya Chaps,Hey Paul, seeing the Hemi in your '33 at Billing a few years back made me think..............that should go in a Fordson no probs, and his is a 392.So it's your fault ya booger.Yes,the Z went to a top chap in Stamford, not a million miles away, still keeps in touch and he's working on it like a trooper.Should be out before long.So the next step is try the front sheet metal on to see what i'm up against.I mean,i can't even get my fingers either side of that monster.OOER.Been a while since i've said that.ATB,Mel

looks nuts but i think your going to have to cut into your front wings, i looked at a hemi for my 35 and it would have taken a major modification of the sheetmetal to get it to fit, pops/fordsons are tiny compared to the '35.

mel,the tablets just don't work any more ,you know i was thinking about about a 6.5 v8 chevy turbo diesel in the escort, but you beat me to it with that engine in plum, just how easy is it to change the glow plugs as they are right on top, i also like the ha suspension on it ,have you thought about mounting it behind you ?

the maxster
04-02-08, 10:20 AM
Hi Mel, I'm fitting a 354 into my Pop. you will have to mod the inner wing plate slightly as the front corner of the rocker cover will hit it. Mine were in a bad state so I removed the whole inner area and left the edge to mount the wings but you could get away with removing just enough metal to miss the covers. With the inners removed it does give more room for the headers. I also have to access the rocker cover bolts on the lower edge via the inner wing area otherwise I couldn't remove them without dropping the engine off of it's mounts.

04-02-08, 02:10 PM
A hemi will fit without hacking the front wings I think, it will depend on setback, I'd hazard a guess that you can forget about not cutting the inner wings. Time to scan the Gasser Madness website for tips maybe?

Hi Mel,The cars looking great. Did you sort out an adapter for your gearbox? I got one from Hotheads they do a good range at at decent price on their website. I've got my hemi mounted in the frame now and have had to chop a bit of the inner wing away (from the already chopped inner wings) The engine is mounted as low as i can get it (practically) and as far back as I can. I did have to cut a bit of the outer wing mounting flange away but not enough to weaken it. Even with the after market rocker covers you should be ok. By the way where did you get yours? They look spot on.

Ok,confession time. You'll see that ain't no Hemi between the rails, but a 318 mopar and box.The Hemi build is gonna take a lot of time and finances (i don't have copious amounts!) so my contingency plan is to set the small block as far back as poss to hopefully squeeze the Hemi in at a later date. This may seem odd to some but it moves the project waaaay forward allowing a realistic completion date.Mel

Now that the engine/box is mounted it's time to tackle the A/post, wing mounting,Bulkhead/firewall area.I knew that the A posts were suspect, they were covered in massive amounts of Filler, worse still was the discovery of some serious leading in this area. This must have been done on it's 70's build as they've also used lead to cover the side vents.

Had some back tracking this last fortnight, engine out/body off etc.when i sat the body on it's new chassis found something adrift somewhere. After a trillion measurements concluded that the old chassis was'nt true, putting the N/S A post 11mm further out than the O/S.Had braced the body well before removal so knew it was'nt that.
