I am in the process of doing a "quick build" on a Pop and the idea is to retain as many useable old parts of the front end as possible. It will be a daily driver with a 2ltr Pinto fitted and I have fitted a MK1 Escort rear axle with leaf springs. I have a complete Pop axle that is in excellent condition that has Ford 4 stud hubs, discs and calipers already fitted and I want to fit telescopic shox instead of lever arms. Is there anything else that you guys have done when retaining the Pop axle? Splitting the wishbone, adding an anti-roll bar etc, or will it be okay with just the shox added?

I might be inclined to save yourself some work and just use the lever arm shocks. They work fine.

woodhead shock absorber brackets

shock absorber brackets to allow fitting of telescopic shock units to front of 'upright' models. this period fitting kit uses the existing holes in chassis etc. we supply the four pieces with bolts as shown on the illustration. use shock absorber type as fitted to early VW (we can supply this at additional cost if required). see fitting instructions for further details.

Thanks for the feedback Jonny69 and poprodder. These mountings look excellent but I will save myself some money and make some up myself, (I am Scottish after all). I was going to use early beetle shox as I have a pair already.

I gather from the lack of response that the standard front suspension will be more than adequate? No news is good news and all that?

I ran a stock Pop for a year as my only transport in the early 70s. The car was in great nick and well maintained but the handling was appalling, just about coping with the power?!? of the 28bhp engine and the flat out 50mph speed. I just recently bought another one as a new project but this one's even worse. At anything over 40mph it's all over the place to the point of being dangerous. My plan is to use something at the front that will give decent handling, like the new Autopower & Custom unit, then throw the old unit in the direction of the nearest skip. Or even better, in the direction of a pipe and slippers Pop restorer who might even pay money for it!
However I suppose it would be easy enough to give it a try first.

I plan to use Escort rear as well so any pics and/or advice on fitting up brackets etc that you could send me would be most welcome.
