Seeing all those threads of workshop progress has promted me to do something that I try not to do as a rule - show everyone what a t**t I am ..........er, I mean show everyone what I'm doing in the workshop.

I've saved up my pennies, spent probably far too many of them on a project vehicle (that I'm really pleased with) and have been scouting around and asking questions/pestering people about parts etc and reading more than my fair share of books/mags looking for inspiration and direction.

I have had this idea in my head for years now and thought i new exactly what i wanted to build. A cool, original looking truck with a small block and air bags. However, as most of you have no doubt found out long ago, things don't always folow the plan and my tastes have changed the more I've learnt and seen.

Now what I'm after is a vintage Hotrod with as many 97's on top of a nailhaed (or something similar) with dropped I-beam, quickchange rear end, crossplys, dynamo etc...........the list goes on. I've now begun to realise that it's not going to happen all at once, particularly as I've still got loads to learn and the likelihodd of getting it right first time is pretty slim and nobody's got bottomless pockets, least of all me!

So, here i am with a solid, original '41 Chevy 1/2 ton in the workshop and a very tight budget and a deep desire for my first rod. What to do????

With a complete lack of artistc/photoshop skill, I can't draw what I want, but can see it in my minds eye quite clearly. So I've made a start on pulling it apart and welding it up.

I've hopefully found an open drive '54 axle for it (Cheers danny) and a Camaro 10 bolt for later down the line, when the v8 comes (thanks to Paul Y). Langy's found some 3"-dropped leaf springs for me (to keep it 'trad') and Rodline reckon they can drop my I-beam a few inches for me. Hopefully i can get a set of '55-'59 brakes on the front for better stopping power, but without having to resort to discs. After lots of deliberating, I think my only choice for now, due to cash flow is to keep the stock 6-pot and box and just dress/tune it up a bit to match the wheels, then progress to the '8 when it's been on the road for a bit.

A set of 15" steels with bullet caps is on the shopping list, (I'd like to keep the 16s as I think some trucks look a bit strange with too-small wheels on, but it looks like there's hardly any choice of widths/tyres in that size) painted a nice lime green or red and shod in a set of Coker cross plys. An old, wide moon tank in the front of the bed would look pretty cool I think too!

I'm not going to modify the body in any way, just get as wide a tyre as I can under the back and go as low as I can all round, with the minimum of technology. That's the plan at least.

Many of you could well be holding your heads in your hands right now, with much better ideas etc.........please feel free to pass them on. As I said, it's my first (and possibly only for a while) attempt a rod and i don't want to **** it up!

The body's pretty good and only needs abit of work on the running boards, bed sides and rear arches, so I'm going to start there, doing the minimum to make it solid and without paint (it's only original once, right?). Then I can store the tin-work and get to work on the chassis and runing gear.

Here goes nothing.........Man, I'm looking forward to this!!!

U need something like photobucket or webshots to host them, this site has limited resources, then u can post fuller size images

I use Webshots and they don't seem to like you linking directly to a photo, only to the whole page for it. On here I think I use the bottom option of the three choices in the 'link to it' tab: just cut and paste into your post:

By the way, there is a thread on '46-'48 Chevy trucks on the HAMB at the moment: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=241443

First attempt at patching the boards. If I let the air get to this, I reckon it should blend in ok.

Lots more of the same until i can get working on the chassis and driveline.

Is it keeping the 4x4 capabilities or have you put a more conventional driveline on the chassis? Any pics would be good to see.

I've seen a few concept drawings on this and other sites and had a quick word with Tootall Paul on friday to see about the possibility of sorting out a 'concept' sketch for my truck. A few emails later, Paul worked his magic and now I've got a good plan to work to (cheers Paul):

http://inlinethumb57.webshots.com/3960/2186835150103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2186835150103085106VSnYLP)

This is using the dressed 6 cyl engine and removing the hood sides. The body is dropped a total of 6" at the back and 8" at the front over 8x15 and 5x15 lime green steels with 3" and 23/4" whitewalls.

Looks good in my eyes and shouldn't break the bank to start with. Now all I've got to do is get on and build it!

Been doing a bit of panel fettling on the odd evening to try and get the tinwork in reasonable shape for the MOT. Trying not to over do it and spoil the look of the truck though.

Onto the bed next and once that's done (not much work needed) I can put all the rear tinwork in the loft and lift the cab off for a goo look at the chassis, engine and box.

That's it for now...back in the workshop tonight. Need to pick up some more sheet steel soon!

Got hold of a 235ci motor and 'box from joff, so I can get that built over the summer, keeping the truck on the road - that's the theory anyway!

Once I get the springs back, I'll roll it out of the workshop and get the bed finished off.

235 motor I believe is a 1956 model. Not sure how to id the 'box (can only find casting numbers for 60's and onwards boxes on the interweb) Think it's a Muncie 3 speed. Anyone know more/different?

I'm thinking I'd be best to fit a later model transmission to this motor, but don't really know what'll fit with the minimum of modification to bellhousing and (more importantly) the stock chassis. Prefer a manual really. Are there any suggestions/kits available?

Will I be able to run this with supertrapp-style baffles only or will I need a full under-car exhaust system too?

Sorry for the stupid questions!

No you wont have to run a super trap (damn ugly things if you ask me) if you get a small diameter tube which goes inside the cone, cut some horizontal slots in it and sort of open them up as if they were louvers. Weld a round disc with a hole in it, to one end of the tube, at the other end weld a larger disc with holes drilled around the circumferance of the disc (this is to let the exhaust gas'es out). So in esence you have made a baffle, this should now slide into the cone/limefire bit and be secured with a tab drilled through the bottom of the cone, so as a bolt can be screwed through the tube to secure the baffle insert in place.
If this is still to loud you can remove the baffle and wrap it in steel wire wool to deaden/quieten it.
Hope thats reasonably clear.

You could go the old skool way with the exhaust Terry and use half of a torque tube for the header. I have them on my T , they have been on there over 5 years and are still in pretty good shape (and I dont look after them.lol).

I welded a flange ring on the end and made a perferated baffle with restricting washers in the end that sits inside the header. This can be removed as and when you please (read put back in for the mot).

I'll get you some pics if you want mate.

I seem to be spending more time writing about my truck than actually working on it lately, but never mind. Got a bit more done last night:

Finally grabbed the bull by the horns and started to have a go at repairing the last and worst of the wheel arches. The problem I had was with measuring up the opposite one to get them to match. What is the best approach for tackling these sorts of jobs when it's not just a case of patching holes? 'Buck' patterns??? Anyway, after scribbling on the workshop floor, making loads of templates and then throwing them away I got something that looked half decent....for me. Made an oversized patch and started to whittle it into something resembling the right shape.

Progress has been slow of late for various reasons. Done what I can with the 216ci, but it really needs a rebuild to get it anywhere near to Mot standards of smoke production!

So, I decided to prematurely drop in the 235ci that's been waiting in the wings. Got it on the engine stand last night and going to do a quick check-up tonight to see what it's like. Has the 'look' of a rebuilt motor, but best to check. If all ok it'll get a flash of fresh paint and the dual intake and exhaust that I got from Cliff at Carolina Classics. It was a good chance to clean all the shi#e off the front half of the chassis with the engine out anyway!

I've got a few bits on the shopping list before I can get it all married up and the finances are tight as always, so it might take a while to complete.

Got my new loom most of the way to being installed at the weekend too.

Results of the engine inspection. It all looks ok to my untrained and inexperienced eye! Evidence of previous grinding work to the crank (has it been balanced or something?) and the valve springs look newish. Cam looks ok, as do the bores. Not sure quite what it has had done to it, but I don't think I'll dig much further - might just check the mains and caps before i put the sump back on.

Progress is slow at the moment, but nonetheless still in a frorwards direction. Really gutted that I didn't get it roadworthy in time for the Hayride, but I sould know by now that these things always take longer than expected.

Painted the block, head and sump now and just waiting for a parts order from Patricks in AZ - gasket set, head bolts, rocker cover etc. Then need some plumbing bits from Langy to get the fuel and oil sorted.

Big box of shiney bits arrived today, so onwards and upwards this weekend! :D Patricks are a cracking firm to deal with - highly recommended.

Langy has been really helpful with the fittings - I ended up sending him a bag of components for him to check the threads on. Being of the Metric generation, I still struggle with that sort of thing. My first experience of american stuff too.

Is there any sort of gauge that I could buy to help me accurately measure and identify different types and sizes of thread, or do I really need to have some idea of what I'm likely to be looking at before I start measuring?

I have now drilled out and tapped the block to convert it to full flow oiling through 3/8" hardlines to a remote filter. Also made myself some very basic air scoops from a scrap length of 2 1/2" alluminium irrigation pipe. Fuel lines are now under construction. Still waiting for my rocker cover and water pump, but should be able to get it back into the chassis very soon hopefully.

I've been getting a bit more done and have been spending most of my time on the small jobs that still have to be done. I have managed to sort out an exhaust system though. Decided to go for steel for the time being as I had two spare 2" systems to butcher up for parts and I need to keep the cost down for now. I plan to get it re-made in stainless once I've had a chance to see how it performs during a shakedown. At least this one should get me through the mot. I abandoned my plans to have the cone exiting through the hood side opening due to space limitations. This way I will be able to run it open or muffled. I may even put a flange on the rear section so that I can remove it completely. For now it's completely welded. I made a 2 into 1 collector to meet the cone (from Paul G) and a Fordson Major tractor silencer. Bends were all 'recycled'.

I also got the plumbing of the oil and fuel lines sorted out at long last (just one mod required to clear the exhaust (doh!). (Thanks for your patience Langy). I even managed to get it to run for a brief period. It needs a new dizzy cap though and the water pump pulley still needs sorting out.

I got it running today following a lot of faffing with the ignition. I finally got stuck in and converted it to 12 volt, something that I should have done from the start - it cranks over an absolute treat now. Sounds nice through the open header cone, runs pretty smooth and responds well. Just needs another oil change and some carb tweaking.

The oil lines have been redesigned for the umpteenth time and I've done some work on the wiring to help 'age' it a bit. New coil, dizzy cap and rotor arm, plugs and leads fitted.

It's a long way off being finished, if it ever will be. I have some 7.50x16's lined up for the rear end and want to get the front down a bit more. I have a 3" drop tube for the front, but that might be too much. So I'm going to give that some more thought. Might go to some 5.50x16's on the front. Also not happy with the exhaust. I think I will end up running something like a 2 1/4" dual system front to back with similar sized dumps somewhere behind the front wheels. This would get me round any potential clearance problems with the current cone dump if I go much lower than the 2" that it sits at now.

Yes thanks Mike. I meant to post a thankyou on the other thread but forgot. Looks like the right bit of kit and it should be easy enough to narrow slightly if required. Cost £250 against nearly £400 for one from Speedway. I just had to go down to London to fetch it!

Hi Pete, many thanks for the kind words.

I have a Borg Warner T5 gearbox that I plan to fit pretty soon. That, coupled with the slightly higher geared 12 bolt rear end that I have should see it being much more appropriately geared. Updates will follow on here as I get them done.

Now that my membership status has been updated, I can let you know what's been going on. I've been fitting my drop tube CPP front end and had a quick lesson in why they don't sell these items to fit pre-'47 trucks!

The axle went together ok and after modifying the ends slightly, all the '52 brakes and kingpin kit went on fine. Got it bolted onto the springs and everything was going well until it came to getting it to point the wheels in the righ direction. I decided to use a later style 'ball-joint' drag link, to try and tighten the system up a bit, but the big problem here was the lever arm shocks getting in the way of everything. The only way that I could see to do it was to fit the drag link upside down and modify the arms to suit. I also used a later pitman arm......

I had to reverse the pitman arm eye and bend it to clear the spring.
http://inlinethumb47.webshots.com/43950/2759198060103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2759198060103085106SEHuBL)

Here you can see the problem that the shocks were causing by being right in the way of the front drag link joint.
http://inlinethumb25.webshots.com/31640/2941725460103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2941725460103085106IYKkFy)

This shot shows the modifications performed on the steering arms, before paint, compared with a stock item (top). The drag link eye was reversed to put the link ball below the steering arm and so well away from the shock above. The tie rod balls were also reversed to put the tie rod below the springs - due to the drop in the axle bringing everythin up so much higher. (the grey bits are where I added some heat to get the bends).
http://inlinethumb40.webshots.com/42919/2670335620103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2670335620103085106kKOaFN)

Steering finally all connected up ok and it seems fine on the road too. Here you can see the overall effect that the drop has had, along with the bigger rear tyres. The back needs to come down slightly now I think!

Now it's starting to look a bit more like a hotrod, or is it!:confused::D Got the 7.50s on the back end and removed the hood sides.

I've had a bit of brake trouble, which seems to be ok now, fitted a pertronix ignition module after breaking down the other day following points failiure and got my 12 bolt finished off ready for installation. Got the S10 tailhousing fitted to the T5 and sorted out a cluch plate and throwout bearing to fit.

The saga continues..........

Went on a few runs with my truck and noticed some water in the rocker cover, which was getting worse. Then came the oil leaking from between the head and the block. Shortly afterwards i noticed a fient tapping sound in the bottom end. Time for some investigation i think!

http://inlinethumb16.webshots.com/45135/2721491770103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2721491770103085106AGscRu)

It seems that it was just a poorly sealed gasket. The head and block seem to be true.

http://inlinethumb31.webshots.com/44062/2805004450103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2805004450103085106trryNG)

On removing the sump, however, the tapping sound turned out to be a bit more serious. It seems that my 'rebuilt' engine had been machined and rebuilt some time in the past for sure. However, trying to get a .020 reground crank to last when using .010 undersize bearings was being a bit hopefull i reckon! So, I pulled the motor out again.

http://inlinethumb21.webshots.com/42068/2299645090103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2299645090103085106QlMpap)

And my buddy came round to assist. He build 3000Hp puller tractors, so he's a good source of expertise with this sort of thing.

http://inlinethumb54.webshots.com/43061/2921471210103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2921471210103085106vpacoJ)

The crank is pretty much shot and won't machine to anything less than .060.

The block is getting a .030 bore and skim. The head will also be skimmed and have a valve job while we're at it.

Ordered a crank from Patricks, along with some other goodies. Going to throw a 3/4 grind cam in and make a proper job of it this time.

Also picked this up the other day:
http://inlinethumb51.webshots.com/43250/2433062060103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2433062060103085106aVpypc)

It's a casing for a Wade RO34 blower, which i got to use for mockup purposes. I'm working on a way to fit this onto the motor once it's back together. I'm thinking that if I make a manifold to sit it on with a burst plate on the side, I can just perch the blower on top and fit a couple of sidedraft carbs, maybe 45 DCOEs or Dellortos etc. Once I've worked it out, I'll get the rest of the parts required to make it complete.

Should help her along!

I was gutted to have to pull the motor apart again, but at least this time it should be built right and with a bit more power. And I have everything ready to just plumb it all straight in when ready. A valuable lesson learnt - do it right the first time and never assume that the last bloke did!

I have also pulled out the 4 speed crash box and torque tube rear. I figured that while it's in the workshop, i may as well get the T5 and 12 bolt fitted. Got a local machine guy to draw up and make an adaptor plate for the 'box.

He's going to make it from 1/2" steel plate and thread the holes for the mounting bolts.

Every cloud has a silver lining as they say and now I'm looking forward to getting the thing on the road even more than I was last time!

Oh yeah, and it's raining again!

While I'm waiting for my parts to arrive I had a go at rebuilding my carbs.

I'm pleased with the results and found the job easier than i thought it would be, so long as they still work!

I got my adaptor plate and the next job is to make some brackets to mount the pedal assembly and handbrake onto the T5.

Got my gearbox adaptor plate sorted out, fitted and mounted the pedals using a small angle bracket for extra support. Also re-bushed the pedals while i was at it. The new trans should now be ready to fit.

Off to collect the block from the machine shop tomorrow and start getting it put back together.

The engine build is not going quite as quickly as I had hoped as I inadvertently ordered the wrong main bearings http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/images/smilies/redface.gif. More on their way over now though.

I spent the weekend having a tidy up and re-organise of the workshop ready for the final push, so hopefully that should help things go a bit quicker. I now have some clear bench space at least.

http://inlinethumb44.webshots.com/42987/2347811740103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2347811740103085106EBnRgp)

I decided to have a go at making a new floor panel to go with the T5, rather than cutting up the original. Second attempt resulted in something close to what I was after. I will cut the holes out as the last job, when the box etc is all in place.

Collecting my cylinder head tomorrow and hope to push on with the engine later this week.

Things are moving on again now with the engine back together and installed, plumbed etc. Box and rear end also fitted for the last time hopefully. Got the crossmember modified and installed too.

'New' crank going in:
http://inlinethumb16.webshots.com/42575/2652148770103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2652148770103085106pAMJfs)
This was a reground and polished stock item from Patricks. The original one needed to go more than .060 to be saved. To build it up with weld would've worked out dearer than getting this one shipped over. The block has recieved a .030 bore and new pistons and rings to match. Also a 264 gind 3/4 cam has gone in with new bearings.

Head back on:
http://inlinethumb12.webshots.com/44235/2975190470103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2975190470103085106ZJpwUW)
The head has now been skimmed and fitted with hard valve seats and new guides.

Paint and ancilaries:
http://inlinethumb52.webshots.com/42803/2967040400103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2967040400103085106wLDsuJ)
This bit was pretty straight forward as it had allready been together once.

Back in the hole:
http://inlinethumb58.webshots.com/36217/2339784400103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2339784400103085106BFhBPo)

5 speed and crossmember sorted:
http://inlinethumb26.webshots.com/42905/2369247310103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2369247310103085106QSjsQr)
The adaptor plate and pedal brackets worked out well, but there is a bit less space to work down there now. Made a new pipe to the master cylinder while i was at it. The crossmember was a bit of a pig - I got a chassis engineering one designed to fit this application, but found that I had to widen it slightly and also cut off and re-position the mounting pad.

Floor panel drilled:
http://inlinethumb36.webshots.com/42275/2642817730103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2642817730103085106hdiZLg)
I just need to cut a hole out for the master cylinder plug cover.

12 bolt going in:
http://inlinethumb25.webshots.com/34648/2791462270103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2791462270103085106cVDxkU)
I got some long u-bolts made up so that I can make up some lowering blocks at some point. New brake pipes made up and installed. I had to fit a reducer to take the main 1/4" circuit down to the 3/16" on the axle (due to the later style wheel cylinders).

Just the prop, shifter and a few small jobs to sort out now. Oh, and make the engine run!

I got it on the road again at the weekend, at long last. All the effort was well worth it though - it goes fantastically well and the 5 speed has transformed it.

It would've been fine with a 4.11 rear end instead of the 3.73 though, as top gear is a bit of a stretch. Should be ideal for motorway work though.

I just need to re-bleed the brakes, sort the timing out and adjust the carbs. Oh, and I got a flat front tyre first time out too!!!http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Here are some pics.

I think it needs to be lower at the back, about 1-2". That's a job for another day though.

The pipe needs a re-design as mentioned before, so that's on the list too. A couple of 2" stainless pipes coming out under the tailgate would look much better.

Thanks Bob - I'm pretty chuffed with both of them to be honest! :)

Got some 2" blocks knocked up for the back end and put them on last night. I think it's made a huge difference and I much prefer the stance from all angles now.

The only trouble is it seems to have made the side pipe look even worse. That is definately on the short list of things to do now.

Went for a run down to see some mates in Stratford yesterday and it went really well - even did some overtaking!

5th really seems to be an overdrive gear though and it doesn't pull that well. Perhaps when I get on and fit the blower, that might help :D.

Yeah, that was the original plan, but I'm not sure. Quite like it on the blacks. I'd like to try a set of ww on it, but don't want to splash the cash!

Maybe I can borrow one for a few miutes from someone at an event to try it out.

Done the head gasket again. This time i used a fel-pro full copper gasket and some well-seal. Also re-torqued after the first warm-up, so I'm hoping that's got it sorted. The run down to the Hayride this weekend should find out.

http://inlinethumb24.webshots.com/45015/2042395670103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2042395670103085106nZzzWX)

While I was at it, I fitted a thermostat which was missing, repaired an oil leak on the timing cover, adjusted the tappets, made up a bracket for the handbrake lever, finished off my floor panel and made a gaiter for the shifter.

Bought some new velocity stacks to replace the crude ones i made from irrigation pipe. I turned up some adaptors from some phosphor bronze that I had Lay about. These are designed for the 2 5/8" carbs and mine are just 1 bbl 2 5/16" ones.

http://inlinethumb17.webshots.com/44624/2959730060103085106S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2959730060103085106trLnnA)

Things left to do include another oil pressure gauge, which i'm going to fit in the panel above the windscreen, a gaiter for the handbrake, handbrake cables and a new speedo cable.

I have nearly assembled all the parts for a new stainless exhaust system too. Just waiting for mufflers and flanges. Can't wait to get that changed.

Then it's onto the blower :D - got two more carbs rebuilt in readiness for the swap.

Keep an eye out for me and the truck at the Hayride - come and say hello!

Mark.

Been having a bit of engine trouble following the trip down to the Hayride, so the engine is back out of the truck and in the process of being rebuilt.

It will be even better next time around though!
