some great work there pal very impressive.i will be looking at this thread with huge interest.
So it’s on to the front end.
When I started the Pop I had the idea of having a dropped tube made and incorporating the Volvo 244 front hubs, disks and 4 pot callipers, utilising Transit kingpins. Well my budget keeps shrinking and even with my 3 jobs I can’t run to that expense, so I have had to rethink my strategy, I decided I would have a go like Mart’s un-finished Pop i.e. Use the original I beam but fit my Volvo hubs and then “Z” the chassis to drop the front. I still intend to go with the parallel 4 bar and coilovers. So here we go…
This is the hub as it stands.

http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0281.jpg
Once the hubs off the stub axle I can give it a bit of a measure.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0282.jpg
Then it’s over to the Pop to do the same.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0283.jpg
Now I can measure the Pop’s stub axle.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0285.jpg
That all done I can retire to the fireside with my laptop and work out what I need in the way of spacers to convert the Pop to Volvo. I need a sleeve/spacer for the back bearing and a sleeve for the front.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0291.jpg
Whilst I’m getting a set of conversion parts made (for as little as possible) I start to strip the front off the Pop.

http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0294.jpg
Back to that shed again.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0295.jpg
Right lets get started.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0296.jpg
That’s all the old hub and back plate off.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0298.jpg
This is my spacer and sleeve, as per my drawings.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0299.jpg
Well, how about that, they both fit!
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0301.jpg
Hopefully these will be the bit’s I don’t need.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0302.jpg
She’s on! What a beauty.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0303.jpg
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0304.jpg
A few minutes later with the disk in place.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0305.jpg
If I say so myself, it’s looking good.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0306.jpg
Now I need to get the calliper mounted, I’m starting with a plywood template. (See I can work in the snow!)
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0310.jpg
And it progresses into this.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0311.jpg
Then after a lot of filing and drilling I end up with one in 10mm plate.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0312.jpg
That’s the base plate, now I need the calliper mount. This I made from 2 pieces of 8mm thick black flat, which will be welded together.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0313.jpg
I prep them and weld them – like me, not too pretty but strong!
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0314.jpg
When it cooled down I welded it to the base plate. (same weld style.)
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0316.jpg
It all fits, with no interference.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0317.jpg
I marked the calliper fixings and then off it came again for drilling and tapping M12.
http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0318.jpg
And there you have it, the callipers on.

http://www.v8pop.com/v8pop2/100_0320.jpg
It’s taken me one hour to show you what’s taken me 8 weeks of snatched half hours to make!
So all I gotta do now is the other side, then it’s on to the parallel 4 bar.
At least I feel I’m getting somewhere.
Cheers. Tim
You made that look easy Mike, im impressed ! keep up the good work !

Really nice work. Properly thought out.
Will you be boxing the chassis?
looking forward to your future instalments, great work there.
you make it look so easy! nice job
My wife was out for the day so I was left dog sitting/working on the Pop, that gave me a chance to finish the other hub conversion and trial fit the axle under the chassis to get some much needed dimensions.

Feel quite pleased with how it's gone, next is making the bat-wings and coilover mounts.
can you make me some bearing spacers?
