    chevy blazer v8's???

yep, yet another tech thread about chevy v8's - but I'm learning slowly!
after establishing that my donor buick regal has a 305 cube sbc in it on the old forum, we come to the next question!
got a call today from a local banger racer, he needs some cash, so am I interested in a 5.3 chevy v8, with an auto on it, from a chevy blazer - 100 quid, cash!
now, I can't think of a 5.3 chevy (327 maybe?) - so I went up and had a look-see, and it's definately a chevy, got no carb or dizzy, but he has the carb somewhere (!)
my q is - what lumps did blazers have in them??
350's?? - or did they have the 305's in them - what about boxes??
this one seemed to have a big cylindrical thing on the back of the box - almost like an overdrive??? - couldn't see too well, as the engine and box was under (!) a truck

    all help / ideas appreciated!

Kev get the engine number. The previous owner may have said 5.3 but that was probably a mistake. Most probably a 350. Oh if it turns over buy it!

Gearbox will be a 4WD box, The bit on the back your talking about is the transfer case.

right - engine is now home, thanks to a mate's transit and a jcb (got to love banger / grasstrack racers!) - engine number on the ledge at the back of the block is 3970010
    - so is that a 350 then adam??

hmmm- bit of googling, got onto mortec
seems it could be one of the following

    3970010....302.....1969....4 bolt mains...Z-28 Camaro
    3970010....327.....1969....2 bolt mains...Trucks and industrial
    3970010....350...1969-80...2 or 4 bolt mains

    so unless it was made in 1969 it's a 350 - superb!

Kev assuming it's a mid 70's + blazer it would be a 350. The 302 and 327's were a lot earlier and unless it's had a different engine which is unlikely your safe to assume its a 350.

You can tell by the shape of the rear crank flange but that would mean taking the box off. At the money he is asking it's got to be a goer anyway. If you don't want it call me!

it certainly is a goer! - it's in the back of the transit!
    cheers adam

ps - is there a way of taking off the transfer box, leaving a 'normal' auto box??
and how can you tell what box it is? - the guy reckoned it's a th400?

no,if it's a TH400 you need to change the output shaft, which means the box has to come completely apart. You need a normal output shaft and tail housing to make it into a 2wd trans.
Quick way to tell if it's the 400,it has a Vac modulator at the front on the opposite side to the shift lever, and a 4 bolt cover at the rear on the same side.

That block number could be a 302, 327 or 350, 2 or 4 bolt. You'd need to check the crank flange to be sure. If it's the original engine then it's more likely to be a 350 and poss a 4 bolt being in a Blazer but you can't tell untilyou drop the sump.
