nice gauges tim.
neil.
After painting I re-fitted the radiator shroud and fan then bubble wrapped it for storage.
And with a dry weekend ahead I set my stall out.
Off with the inlet manifold
And off with the valley gasket!! Ouch!!
That cams got to go!
Valve cover and Rockers off.
Head off, bores don’t look bad!
Other side much the same.
There’s supposed to be a bolt head somewhere!!
And the other head off.
I’ve covered the block up for now so I clean and sort the heads in the shed, they can go into storage (in the Pop) whilst I look at the block.
Thanks for looking, more when I do more.
Cheers. Tim W.
Eurgh! That's similar to my 2.0 engine sludge pit!
Cracking on Tim
Layabout.
All my rovers looked like that when you strip them down, totally unloved get yourself a 25 litre container and cut it sideways so you can immerse the heads in with your favourite cleaner
I'll second that nice set up there

Started to strip the heads down…
I intended replacing the springs, but this would have made my mind up anyway.
As a Rover virgin, I do have a question…
All the rebuild stuff I have talks about discarding the old “Valve Stem Oil Seals” but when I stripped the heads, I didn’t see any to discard!!
Looking at Rimmers they sell the post 94 poly type but the pre 94 (mines 11A13133 a 79-80) have the “Tap Washer” type on the inlet valve only!
My question is do others fit them? Should I fit them?
Here’s a couple of photos of one of the heads if it helps.
Thanks for looking, more when I do more.
Cheers. Tim W
Personally after doing more than a few head jobs i would have the guides pushed out and the later valve guides fitted with the proper seals, the flat washer jobbies aren't worth a **** if you can afford it some new valves and the faces re cut and they will last years.
hi tim,
the last rover i did i used small block ford umbrella seals, same as real steel recommend for small block chevy's as they have rubber washers/o rings too. must be a gm thing (rover was a buick engine).
neil.
Thanks John, but I'm not going to have the funds for that much work mate!!
As a buy the way what do you use for locking/lubricating the head bolts please, any old locktite?
Thanks Neil, may look at that as a more cost effective route.
Cheers. Tim W.
Just cleaned the threads up and put them in never used any lube on mine
Ooh, thats an unloved engine
Agreed, fit the Chevy seals on all 8 valves.
