Good Luck Paul, I'll be doing that in a couple of months time, hopefully without the blowlamp to get the oil out!
Cheers. Tim W.
This is one of the big ends. No signs of wear and measures bang in the middle of tolerance.
No picture but the pistons are all scuff free and have all the original machining .

Too lazy to change the oil .... i wonder if it had been drained prior to pulling and that's whats left at the bottom of a poorly serviced engine ? Probably never been hammered either ? Do you know what vehicle it came out of ?
It came out of a Granada. Paid £100 for the whole car, scrapped the rest.
It hadn't been drained, there was a whole sump full of treacle.
I drove it onto the trailer when I bought it, drove fine.

Plus timing chain set. Biggest issue at the moment is con rod bolts. They are single use and it seems they no longer exist. ARP rod bolts are available but £127 a set
I won't be cheap by the time I'm done.

take a rod bolt to a bolt supplier and get the right 'grade' bolts from them.
neil.
Not doing that! It's a risk I'm not prepared to take.
ARP bolts ordered.

I've been progressing the engine, cleaning and checking. I now have all the parts I need except the rings, which are on the way.
The hydraulic cam followers have been stripped and had repeated trips through my ultrasonic bath which is heated, so a hot solvent clean.
They have been a pain but are now cleaned and re-assembled.
The block has been cleaned, threads chased and given a couple of coats of brushed epoxy followed by badly applied enamel. I should have used 2k but this was so much easier than sheeting everything down for a block that can hardly be seen when it's in the car ( I know, idle git).
The picture is before I razored off the excess on flanges etc.

You can brush 2K on easily enough - I painted my block like it and it comes out smooth enough.

agreed, i did the engine and box for my anglia with 2k brushed on.and loads in the past too.
It's done now, I'll live with it. The block is buried under other stuff when it's all back in so no one will see it.

Progress has been a bit slow of late due to other stuff (that is Sandra has found her "to do" list) plus it looks like there will be a wait for rings as they are a bit on the rare side.
I have been abusing my heated ultrasonic bath again after I found that a piston/rod would fit in. Results are as shown. Excuse the scruffy background!
The crank has been cleaned thoroughly and fitted in the block. Torqued and all spins very nicely. It's not quite as packed in as it looks but I am getting pushed for space!
The injectors are away for cleaning/checking at a local race specialists I found by accident.
Head is being cleaned at the moment after the intakes were given a quick clean up with my die grinder. Nothing drastic just a bowl blend and flash removal. The valves and seats are in really good condition, just encrusted with crud (no surprises there!).

It will all be worth it. Despite their reputation I've always found them to be a great engine , so torquey , powerful and very economical . A friend used one in his car after removing his 350 ( it stopped him going diesel) and despite it being a big heavy car it performed same as if still in granada .Plus you spend a fair bit to get a Pinto up to the same output .

I agree with that, very nice to drive. The bad rep comes from Fords choice of antifreeze and peoples unrealistic expectations of timing chains.
It's not an easy rebuild in terms of parts though. The aforementioned timing chains are now non-existant, the manufacturers discontinued them some time ago (I spoke to them). However they do supply the same chain to these guys https://www.timingchains.co.uk/ who will make one for you.

Slowly plodding away at it but the heat in my workshop is beating me by midday.
Valves all lapped in nicely with just a quick twizzle, springs and bits all refitted. Head on and tightened down.
Cams in and the oil spray bars cleaned until spotless (hurray for the heated ultrasonic!)
Timing tomorrow.

I was going to say cam lube !! But these are old camshafts ?
They are actually coated in Lucas assembly lube John.
And yes, old cams.
