I must say I LOVE those old Austin sixteens. From memory, didn't they have an in-built jacking system?

Here's a few pics of my Aunt (Sue's) car. Built by Steve Birch in the 70's and called Amber Gambler.
It has been her daily for over 20 years now and has worn quite a few paint jobs.

    When Steve built it.

It's first guise when Sue had it.

Just one of the other paint jobs.

This is how it is now after a recent makeover. Fresh paint, Wisbech stainless front end, re-profiled front wings and Mondeo rims on the rear which have a better off set allowing the rear wings to be narrowed 2 inches either side.

The Prefect may have had a Daimler too, Kev will know for sure and I think when it was featured in a magazine it was titled as the Southern Spookster.

Oops, few more added sice I posted, I'm referring to the first shots of the white cycle fendered Prefect. The number on the blue one SPL377 seems familiar, it wasn't the one that was orange with a SBF in a later life was it? The black one reminds me of Steve Boden's but I'm sure it's not his.

The orange Prefect you were thinking of was owned by John Brewster, but had KRK in the reg. had a hot 302 with GT40 heads etc, once timed at 142mph by a Granada police car.....now being rebuilt with a 383 Mopar and 727 box by Ian Hudson up in darkest Norfolk.

I saw this car on boxing day at the Wythall classic car do. Parked next to my Ranchero as luck would have it. Chatted to the owners (Gavin's aunt and uncle(?)) and asked if it was the old amber gambler. (from the original reg agw 5(?) - amber gambler wagon).
I remember the car well, because it used to belong to Mart Groves from Halesowen, I think he must have bought it from Steve Birch. Mart had had it painted - the painter was well known - Cook or something like that - and Mart wanted to sell it. He wanted £750 for it. I scraped every penny I could get together and tried to buy it but he didn't want the £550 I could muster. It had a Ford 1500 pre cross flow and an auto box, both fitted by Mart, I think. It subsequeltly was bought by Wayne Saunders, who finished it and it was ran by his wife (Leyla?? - dont know the proper spelling) until bought as Gavin says, by his Aunt.

    Mart.

AGW5 was always a nicely proportioned rod and it still looks good IMO.

    I was there too Mart.
Clive said someone was talking to them about the Austin. I thought it was you when he said you were in a Ranchero. Still yet to meet you though mate.
Clive swapped in a 1600 crossflow when they got it and it also had an auto box fitted a couple of years back as my Aunt prefers them.

Have to agree Kev that the car has always had good proportions. There was debate years ago if the same guy who chopped it also did jam roller as they are so similar.
My Aunt very nearly sold it this year as she fancied a change but decided to update it instead to try and lose the 70's stance, hence the wisbech front and reworked wings front and back and a more classic hot rod paint job. Definately the best it has looked.

Yes, I,ve seen this one around local shows/runs a lot. I remember seeing it in a supermarket car park on the Coventry rd. in Sheldon some years ago, made my day. Still looks good, although I have'nt seen it in it's latest guise yet. Missed the day at Wythall, I thought they were not having them anymore ? I am suffering from the lurgy anyway, so probaly would not have made it.

    Hi John
They live in Sheldon so not surprising you saw it around there.
The guy who organises the Wythall meets reckons they should be OK for another year as the land owners have renewed the lease. (or something like that)

Must try to get over there for the next one, whenever that is ?

By the way, did your Uncle have a metallic grey pop, crossflow and slots, some years back, that lived in Sheldon too?

Think it got sold to a bloke who went to a Mid England Roadster meet at Birmingham Welsh (showing my age now !), last time I saw it it was in primer and towed on the end of a rope behind an escort van in Sutton ?

    Beat me to it Barry!
Clive sold it to Barry and then bought Roy Wildings black and flamed V6 powered pop.
