Greg Saunders is bringing in some new drip rails from Florida (we're off to the DDay 75th in Normandy) so body and roof will have to be split. Going to be interesting.

Decided to have a break and actually make something new for the coupe. The existing fuel tank was made out of 3mm(!) aluminium weighed a ton and capacity was a whopping 26.8 gallons. New one is 16 made from mild steel and will be seam welded and then lined with a tank sealer.Name: IMG-20190521-WA0001.jpeg

I could make all sorts of comments along the lines of "I didn't know you were a bender?" & "You can't fold now, you're getting there!" But I won't! Looking good Mr Smiff!

Well back from Normandy beaches and on to the coupe. All brake parts arrived from Summit (twice!) And assembly begun.

Never seen so many parts per side. Got plenty of pics on my phone whilst dissassembing and then I left the damn thing out in the rain. Google not much help so an afternoon spent trial and error!

New stainless steel bushes for rear end fitted, thanks Kieron.

Felt brave enough to have a go at the drip rails. Thanks to Greg Saunders who brought them in from the States on his trip with me to Normandy beaches, I had a complete set but have decided only to do the rear rails.
Thought long and hard on how to do these, lots of horror stories but came up with the idea of using a thin disc to very carefully cut the old one out.Name: 20190618_120836.jpeg

But only cutting full depth in small sections and trimming new rail to suit.Name: 20190618_120818.jpeg

This way the roof didn't have to be completely split from the body. The new rail fits really well and is ready for final fix.Name: 20190618_120710.jpeg

So drip rails fitted and really happy with them. Time to strip paint from the middle of the panels ( didn't blast them so as not to run the risk of distortion). Actually took 4 or 5 applications of paint stripper to get rid of all the paint layers and filler, but it needed stripping. In some areas there was laquer, paint, primer, filler, paint, primer and filler. And some painted over red rust, no wonder it was micro blistering.
The irony I suppose is I will have to blast these areas!Name: 20190629_095940.jpeg

gone are the days when nitromors took all that off in one go. now they've taken out the 'dangerous' ingredients (that stripped paint ) you're back to multiple goes at it .

Bit of pause, been to the Euronats in Switzerland and racing the Mustang so something had to give, but I have not been idle!

I now have a nice clean re end, tank painted, sealed etc. and my still not a teen grandson helped making and fitting the brake lines. His attention to detail is amazing and he's mastered the brake flaring tool!

I couldn't get what I wanted for holding the brake, power cable and fuel lines so made and polished up some ali. Bit of an over kill but does the job admirably. You can also see the finished handbrake cable, again using some hand made blocks in aluminium.
Next up the exhaust system should be fun?!Name: 20190922_175955.jpeg

Back to body. I thought this was going to be a nightmare, laying on my back dodging the sparks etc. but three lengths of 4 b 2, 6 bolts (big) and some puny muscles later....
