    Decent ignition key switch.

I’ve bought several aftermarket kit car type ignition switch units over the years, and each one has felt pretty cheap, sloppy action, the key fits in and operates like a Thai rental bike does etc..

Anybody got any recommendations for one, something new, decent action, good solid terminals, not scratting around in a scrap yard or similar.

I would get a Lucas 47SA switch from Auto Electrical Supplies.

I'd suggest looking for Pollack brand stuff, and do tell if you find a good uk source. They originate from India (which doesn't immediately scream quality product, but they are) and are included in some of the higher end wiring kits eg American Autowire. I have one in use with no issues and one in a project and would like another for use elsewhere. I hade a scare last year (2019!!) when I thought the one in use was failing but it turned out to be a faulty but nearly new starter motor, so was looking but don't recall finding an obvious uk source. I think Summit carry them so worth thinking about if other things are to be needed too?

They both look like they might be the same unit, and I’ve bought the one Buffalo linked to, a couple of days ago. Seems fairly solid, with a proper key in. Might even buy a second one to keep as a spare, that will guarantee the first will never fail.

I’ll give it a squirt of AC50 inside, as it will be exposed to the elements somewhat in my open T.

    Thanks chaps.

Hi Paul. I might mention that if you put any kind of lubricant in the switch, it will collect dust over a short period of time and then may not open!
I worked for a very large building company before I retired which had over 100 vehicles for me to look after and I came across this many times.
You can buy switch covers which has a loop which goes behind the locking nut and a cap attached to it. I'll look it up tomorrow if I have time.
They are usually available on boat chandler websites.

That sounds a good idea, on an open top car. Cheers.

The switch in the photo looks pretty good. Where's that from?
I know you think you believe you understood what I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what I said isn't always what I meant.

You wouldn’t believe it, I was just looking through my big box of car electricals, and there at the bottom is a very smooth action ignition switch, replete with two decent keys......

It’s one I bought in the Philippines years ago, but never used. At least I have a spare now.
