    Steering rack/gaiters identification

    Hi,
seeking some help please, does anyone recognise the steering rack that i have fitted to my car (the builder said it was mk1 escort)
I am after a set of gaiters for this rack, which seems to have turned into a bit of a mare,i ordered a set for a mk1/ mk2 rack and at first glance they were too small in length/diameter etc. My rack dimensions: main body is 36cm long..the n/s track rod arm is 21cm..the o/s track rod arm is 21.5cm..the track rod arms are 14mm in diameter with a reduced seat of 12mm for the small end of the gaiter..the rod arms have a coarse thread which research tells me is a mk2 escort rack !
The o/s end of the rack gaiter fitting is 46mm and the n/s end of the rack gaiter fitting is 34mm...
The gaiter dimensions are n/s long boot is 170mm x 12mm x 32mm and the o/s short boot is 130mm x 12mm x 46mm...the main body of both gaiters are 60mm in diameter
All have been manually measured, but are fairly accurate.....so if anyone can definately id the rack and or gaiters i would be very grateful..
The only gaiters I have found that look identical to mine are on rally design website and dimensions are long boot: 180mm x 10mm x 25.9mm
short boot: 110mm x 10mm x 43.45mm so don't seem to match mine...they do also supply an identical heavy duty set that they say will not fit the standard rack, but seem reluctant to reveal the dimensions of these...do I have a H/D rack I wonder !!

    Many thanks keith

if you email 'fao andy' at rally design i'm sure he'll check the h/d boot sizes when he gets 5 minutes. he's good like that, lol.

That's what I thought John (what I was told) but the ones I got were too small (borg & beck) like I say the only place that I've found to have boots that look identical to mine is Rally Design....I got the dimensions of the standard ones: long boot 180mm x 25.9mm short boot: 110mm x 43.45mm...which seem too small
the h/d boots which also look identical they say will not fit a standard rack...so I wonder if they are bigger...and wonder if I may have a h/d rack !
perhaps I'm over thinking all this, and these gaiters will stretch more than I think....or perhaps I should just purchase a set of the trimmable universal ones..
    thanks keith

from memory the hd rack is bigger overall with more girth (ooer missus) than the stock type. they are supplied with new clamps and bushes as stock ones don't fit so that's a good sign for your issue. i'd be too impatient and would have ordered them by now and stretched them on there.

Thats what i was thinking/hoping Neil, when i asked Andy for the h/d dimensions last week last week he said that's a bit difficult as we dont have them in stock, but he said if you let me know what you need, i will take some measurements of some fitted to a new rack...thats the reply i'm still waiting for (if they were in stock i think i would have done as you suggest) interestingly the images of both set's of gaiters on the website look pretty indentical, but they mention that the h/d will not fit standard rack...and the h/d are like four times the price of the standard ones...so there's got to be some significant difference between the two, hopefully Andy will reply soon..
    Cheers

Thanks for the reply and images John, it certainly looks very similar and the borg and beck gaiter's i received looked the same as yours, but they just didn't even look like they would fit, especially as Neil mentioned "the girth" just looked too small, (on the knuckles/fittings that attach the the track rod arms to the end's of the rack) also looked short to me...as i said, perhaps these things will stretch far more than i think.
Looking at your rack it appears it has the coarse metric thread track rod end fittings (this i was told makes it a mk2 rack) are your track rod arms 14mm in diameter ?
    Many thanks for your help..
